Fight back against cyber threats!

Ransomware-types-400x211

There is a cyber scam going on this week that most of us have probably heard of by now either via news media, friends or employers.  WannaCrypt Ransomware stops you from using your PC, and then holds your PC files for ransom.  WannaCrypt targets out of date Windows devices, so if you have not updated your windows software on any of your devices recently you should do so NOW.

IDENTITY THEFT FACTS:

+ 13.1 million identity theft victims annually.

+ $15 billion consumer total fraud losses.

+ 1 in 5 data breach victims experience fraud.

There are simple precautions you can take to protect yourself from malicious software:

  1. Make sure your computers are all current with their Microsoft Updates
  2. Do not open any emails that don’t look legitimate – Ransomware often arrives in an email that, on the surface, looks legitimate. Be very careful!
  3. Make sure that your data is being backed up and that you have a current backup.

But what do you do if you have been attacked? Hacked 2

Microsoft has an FAQ section that helps you recover your files if affected by Ransomware without paying.  You can find the information here:  Malware Protection Center.

But there is more you can do to protect yourself from cyber threats.  Most homeowner’s policies either include or offer an endorsement to the policy protecting you from identity theft/cyber threats.  All eight companies that we represent here at Harbor/Brenn Insurance Agencies either include identity fraud expense or it can be added to your home policy for minimal cost as an endorsement.  While these endorsements do not protect your computer physically from malware; the insurance may include credit alerts, account and credit monitoring, and reimbursement for the costs associated with repairing your credit history if you become a victim.  Some of the companies even aid with unraveling the snags of identity theft even if you know what to do.
